  • Video Shopping Stimulates Online Consumption

Posted on October 27th, 2009 Toby 96 comments

Recently, some famous Chinese video-sharing websites like youku, tudou, etc have announced the cooperation with taobao – one of the giant online shopping websites, and launched the video shoping channel. However, is this video shopping as popular as TV shopping, which was created several years ago but has been accused sometimes and will it become the new trend of online consumption?

By the end of June 2009, Chinese netizens have reached 3.38 million. During all kinds of network applications, online shopping counts 26%. According to CNNIC(China Internet Network Information Center), there is one online shopper out of four Chinese. Under this circumstance, the introduction of online video shopping makes sense.

From the perspective of sellers, video shopping can display their commodities thoroughly, increase the confidence of the buyers and promote the products effectively. If the sellers are not so happy with the video technology provider, they can change at any time without paying anything.

When speaking of buyers, the cooperation between video websites and e-commerce platform can definitely allow the consumers to have a realer shopping experience and reduce the risks. However, video shopping also reminds people of some unpleasant memories brought by TV shopping several years ago. People always feel they are cheated after purchase because the earlier TV shopping programs were full of exaggerated descriptions and false demonstrations. Things are different now! Video shooping is secured by the so-called e-commerce platform. Such e-commerce platform has perfect shopping evaluation system, each transaction evaluation are directly displayed online for buyers’ reference and as long as you are able to pick to trustworthy sellers, the chances of being deceived are slim.

Every coin has two sides. The No.1 obstacle for video shopping righ now is whether it is strong enough to escape from the stereotype that most people have towards network shopping fraud. Another difficulty is how to make videos that would help to sell in an easy way? Due to the fact that most sellers are not good at making videos, the website has launched “video album” service to help those sellers complete their videos. It’s really easy because the sellers just have to pick some nice pictures of products and the video will be automatically generated.

It takes time to accept a newly-born stuff, but I’m quite optimistic about the future of video shopping. Let’s just be patient and see what will happen. Cheers!

By the way, if you are interested in how to use flash videos to promote your products either in your blog, online shop, own website or forum, some tricks are available here to help you. Hope it’s useful and wish you a prosperous business!

  • Adobe May Cooperate with Apple to Transplant Flash Player to iPhone

Posted on October 21st, 2009 Toby 67 comments

According to the CEO of Adobe America, Adobe company is planning to transplant its flash player to iPhone.

Adobe CEO indicated that Adobe may cooperate with Apple to ensure the smooth flash player application on iPhone in Adobe company’s first quarter performance conference early this week. These comments were made when he was asking about the possibilities to transplant flash to other products. According to what he said, flash now has become the synonym of Internet, it all needs flash’s support for people who want to experience the wonderful Internet. So far, flash is able to run on Windows Mobile platforms and has been installed in up to 5 billion cell phones.

Adobe CEO said: “we are planning to cooperate with Apple and to transplant flash to iPhone. We have evaluated the Apple SDK, and we are proudly to say that we are able to independently develop the iPhone-exclusive flash. We do firmly believe that our cooperation will benefit both of our customers.”

Adobe company officials have made it clear that they wish the flash Web applications can be used in iPhone. However, Apple doesn’t say “Yes” yet because they are worried the flash applications may lower down iPhone’s speed. According to Apple Chief Executive Mr. Steve Paul Jobs’s speech at shareholders’ meeting in May last year, full-function flash applications run so slowly in iPhone and without any practical use. In addition, Steve Jobs added: Flash Lite mobile flash can’t run on the Web. But the comments from Adobe told a different story: Adobe company is able to use Apple SDK to develop iPhone-version Flash Lite..

FYI, Microsoft announced earlier this week that it will allow Flash Lite to run on Windows Mobile.

  • Encyclopedia of Life

Posted on July 28th, 2009 Toby 41 comments

    Earth is beautiful.
    Earth is complex.
    Earth is fragile.
Earth is a delicate inter-dependent web of ecosystems that provides the basis for all life forms.

Constantly reconfiguring, morphing, decaying, the natural world is at once confounding, sublime, brutal, and unspeakably elegant.

There are 1.8 million species that we know of.
And many millions more we don’t even have names for.
Countless are going extinct before we even glimpse them.
Despite serious efforts to catalog Earth’s species, the task has barely begun.

It’s time we embarked on a bigger, bolder effort together.

    Let’s call it-Encyclopedia of Life(EOL).

The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is an ambitious, even audacious project to organize and make available via the Internet virtually all information about life present on Earth. The EOL staff is made up of scientists and non-scientists working from museums and research institutions around the world.

The Encyclopedia of Life is an unprecedented global partnership between the scientific community and the general public. Its goal is to make freely available to anyone knowledge about all the world’s organisms.

Everyone can contribute to this encyclopedia via the following ways:

I want to share my knowledge about a group of organisms.

I have images or videos I’d like to share.

I’d like to help improve EOL content.

I’m a professional scientist, and I would like to help curate EOL pages.

I have an online database I’d like to share.

I am part of a community of scientists who would like to assemble information about the organisms we work on.

I’m already contributing information to another project, and I’d like to see this information integrated into EOL.

I’m a scientist, and I would like to devote a considerable amount of my time to working on contributions for the Encyclopedia of Life.

I’m a teacher or college faculty member and would like my students to contribute to the Encyclopedia of Life.

I’m a student and I would like to contribute to the Encyclopedia of Life.

I am a scientist who has compiled an authoritative classification that EOL should be using for a group of organisms.

I have a database of species information, but it is not yet online.

I want to have an Encyclopedia of Life that focuses on the organisms in my part of the world and that presents information in my language.

Let’s try to do it and make our own world more complete and beautiful! Everybody counts!

  • Solar Eclipse on July 22, 2009

Posted on July 21st, 2009 Toby 46 comments

The solar eclipse on July 22, 2009 is probably the most perfect and longest total solar eclipse during hundreds of years from 1991 to 2132.

In Chinese tradition, there are many mysterious legends about solar eclipse, “Tengu eat the sun” is the most famous one among them. It is said that there is a disciple of Sakyamuni named Mulian, he is a kind-hearted man. However, his mother is just the opposite. Once his mother tried to humiliate the vegetarian Buddhist monks by feeding them dog meat, but failed at last. The Jade Emperor in heaven is extremely angry when he knows this. Therefore, Mulian’s mother was put to hell as a punishment and transformed to a dog. Mulian is a dutiful son and he tried his best to rescue his mother. It was a successful rescue though Mulian is punished too as a cost. “The evil dog” went to the palace where Jade Emperor lives and tried to eat the sun and moon as a revenge. People all know that “the evil dog” is afraid of nothing except the crackers, so it eventually becomes a tradition to chase the “the evil dog” away using crackers when solar eclipse happens.

Scientifically, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth.

A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon and many people travel to remote locations to observe one. The one is going to happen tomorrow exactly belongs to this category.

It is said that the black shadow of the moon tomorrow will land in the Arabian Sea first, and then cross through central and north-east India, south-east Nepal, Bhutan’s most areas, the northern part of Bangladesh, the most eastern and southern India, as well as in central Tibet; later the shadow will move across the central region of China, and then to Ryukyu Islands of the China East Sea. In China, this total solar eclipse will pass Tibet, Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, etc in order. 11 provinces in total. The estimated arrival time for this longest and most perfect solar eclipse in China is from 9:00-9:37AM, Jul, 22, 2009.

Tips for watching this total solar eclipse:

    1. Must wear special-made glasses to protect your eyes from burning and you can easily find this kind of glass in supermarket like Carrefour etc.

    2. Better wear a hat with brim to create a darker environment for the better-effect view and again, to protect your eyes.

    3. Better rest your eyes every 30 seconds.

To be continued tomorrow with wonderful videos!
